Denham Lock Wood, Protected woodland near North Uxbridge, Great Britain
Denham Lock Wood is a wet woodland along the Grand Union Canal featuring alder, oak, and willow trees on boggy ground. The protected site includes fen areas that stay damp throughout the year.
The site became a protected area of scientific importance in 1986 and has been managed by London Wildlife Trust since then. This recognition ensured the woodland would be carefully looked after for wildlife.
The site functions as an environmental education center where visitors learn about local ecology and conservation practices through guided nature walks.
You can enter the woodland via a footbridge across the Frays River from Frays Farm Meadows or walk along the Grand Union Canal Towpath. The canal path stays open year-round and offers easy walking.
The balsam carpet moth was first recorded here in 1955 as only the second known British location for the species. This rare finding drew attention to the woodland's importance for moth conservation.
