Colcombe Castle

Colcombe Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in Colyton with substantial stonework still standing in places. The remains show portions of walls made from limestone rubble and sections of the original buildings.

Built in the 13th century by Hugh de Courtenay, the castle was later used as a residence by the Earls of Devon. It was destroyed in 1644 during the English Civil War.

The castle grounds contain architectural elements from different periods, representing the evolution of English defensive structures from medieval to post-medieval times.

The ruins sit on private property with limited public access, so visits require prior arrangement or permission. Come during dry weather since the ground is uneven and can be muddy.

The kitchen section preserves elements from the early 1500s with original ceiling beams still showing distinctive carved details. This part is among the better-preserved areas of the entire site.
