Courtyard Theatre, Theatre venue in Stratford-upon-Avon, England
Courtyard Theatre is a theatre venue in Stratford-upon-Avon featuring a thrust stage layout with capacity for 1,048 spectators. The space was designed with an innovative layout that later served as a model for other theatrical projects.
Built in 2006 by architect Ian Ritchie, the theatre served as a temporary replacement while major renovations took place at other nearby theatres. From 2007 to 2010, it allowed the Royal Shakespeare Company to continue performances during construction.
The theatre presented Shakespeare's works alongside contemporary plays, all produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Audiences here experienced the same blend of classics and modern productions that defined the company's repertoire.
The venue is straightforward to navigate with clear sightlines from the rear of the seating area to the stage. Visitors should expect that the space may be affected when adjacent construction work happens nearby.
The original steel structure of the theatre still stands and is now occupied by The Other Place, a 200-seat studio theatre that opened in 2016. This smaller venue offers intimate performances within the framework of what was once a larger auditorium.
