Derwent College, Grade II listed college building in Heslington, England
Derwent College is a residential complex at the University of York featuring twelve accommodation blocks built from prefabricated concrete with modern architectural design. The buildings provide student housing, dining facilities, and spaces for academic and social activities across the campus.
The college was founded in 1965 as one of the first two colleges at the newly created University of York, officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The site was later expanded when buildings from another college were integrated in 2012.
The Norman Rea Gallery here is run entirely by students and showcases artwork created by people studying at the university. Visitors can see rotating exhibitions that reflect what students are making and thinking about artistically.
The site provides accommodation, dining areas, and various service facilities for students and visitors. Access and availability of services may vary depending on the time of day and academic calendar, so it is best to contact the university beforehand.
The college was among the very first buildings at the University of York and displays the experimental architecture of the 1960s using prefabricated elements. The design with concrete blocks was an innovative approach for large-scale student housing at that time.
