Doxey Marshes, Nature reserve near Stafford, England
Doxey Marshes is a wetland nature reserve near Stafford that covers flat terrain with pools, grasslands, and reedbeds within the River Sow floodplain. The site combines different habitats with flowing water and reveals how a river ecosystem functions across multiple interconnected spaces.
The area formed naturally as a river floodplain along the Sow and was later recognized for its scientific value. Protected status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest ensured the long-term preservation of these wetland habitats.
Over 200 bird species inhabit the reserve throughout the year, making it a central location for wildlife observation and environmental education in Staffordshire.
Enter the reserve from the main car park on Wootton Drive, where several viewing platforms let you observe different zones. The paved paths support various mobility needs and provide clear sightlines across all sections of the reserve.
Cattle grazing is used to keep grasslands open and protect ground-nesting birds from overgrowth. This method mimics natural processes and allows staff to carefully monitor animal numbers during breeding periods.
