Stafford Castle, Medieval castle on hilltop near Stafford, England.
Stafford Castle is a stone fortress on a hilltop near Stafford that covers 26 acres. The site includes a central keep, two baileys, wooded areas, and a visitor center housing historical objects.
Robert de Toeni built the first timber fortress around 1100 on William the Conqueror's orders to control the region. Over the centuries, the site was rebuilt and expanded multiple times until it took its current stone form.
The castle features a medieval herb garden with plants that were once used for different healing purposes. Visitors can observe how people connected nature and medicine in those times.
The site provides free parking and well-maintained paths throughout the visitor center area. Allow time to navigate the hilly terrain when exploring the different sections of the fortress.
Archaeological digs uncovered that the keep received a fifth tower added to the middle of its north wall, an unusual structural change. This later addition shows how castle builders adjusted their designs when new needs arose.
