Dr Williams's Library, Research library in Gordon Square, London Borough of Camden, United Kingdom
Dr Williams's Library is a research library in Gordon Square holding extensive collections on Protestant nonconformity, theological studies, and ecclesiastical history within a Grade II listed Gothic Revival building. The rooms contain rare books, theological texts, and specialized materials covering philosophy, history, and Byzantine studies.
The library was founded in 1729 using Daniel Williams's estate and initially housed a substantial collection of religious texts and scholarly works. After relocating several times, it settled in Gordon Square in 1890 and became a central repository for nonconformist Protestant history.
The collection displays manuscripts and personal documents from Protestant dissenters, offering insight into their beliefs and resistance to established church structures. Walking through these materials shows how they shaped religious thought in Britain.
A visit requires advance arrangements, particularly for those without membership, since the collections are access-restricted. Preparing ahead helps visitors use the materials efficiently and make the most of their time there.
In 2006 the library sold a Shakespeare First Folio to secure financial stability for the future. This difficult decision proved essential to preserve the remaining historical treasures held within its walls.
