Dream, Public sculpture at Sutton Manor, England
Dream is a white fiberglass sculpture depicting the head of a young girl with eyes closed, located on a former mining site in Merseyside. Pathways through the surrounding woodland community area allow visitors to view and move around the work from different angles.
The work was unveiled in 2009 as part of Channel 4's Big Art Project initiative. This television-backed initiative aimed to revitalize the abandoned mining site and create a new cultural destination for the region.
The sculpture's name reflects the vision of Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, who consulted with former miners from the surrounding community when creating this work. This collaboration connected the area's industrial roots with contemporary artistic vision.
The site is open year-round with clearly marked paths suitable for different abilities. Visitors can explore around the sculpture at their own pace and view it from various vantage points throughout the grounds.
The sculpture is constructed from many separate pieces stacked across multiple levels, creating its complete form. Deep underground foundations anchor the entire structure, allowing it to stand firmly despite its substantial height.
