Dominion Cinema, Art deco movie theater in Newbattle Terrace, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The Dominion Cinema is a category B listed art deco movie theater on Newbattle Terrace in the Morningside area of Edinburgh. It has several screening rooms of different sizes, keeping the original decorative details of its 1930s construction alongside modern projection equipment.
The cinema opened in 1938 and is one of the few purpose-built movie theaters from that era still operating in Scotland. Its listed status protects the original facade and key interior features from being altered.
The Dominion shows mainstream releases alongside independent films, drawing a mixed crowd of regulars and occasional visitors. The original 1930s interior gives the experience a very different feel from a modern multiplex.
The cinema is in the south of Edinburgh and is easy to reach by bus or on foot from the city center. Because the rooms are small, it is worth booking ahead, especially for popular screenings.
The same family has run this cinema for four generations, which is very rare in a sector now dominated by large chains. Some screens offer table service during the film, so food and drinks are brought directly to the seat.
