Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, Grade II listed pub at Castle Rock, Nottingham, England.
Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem is a protected tavern built into the sandstone rock below Nottingham Castle. The rooms sit partly in carved caves and partly in masonry buildings against the cliff face, with low ceilings and uneven passageways.
A drinking house stood here by the 18th century under the name The Pilgrim. The current name was introduced later to adopt the legend of crusader knights who supposedly stopped here in the 12th century.
The name comes from an old saying that pilgrims stopped here on their way to the Holy Land. The drinking rooms preserve traditional English tavern atmosphere and carry names that recall local stories.
The entrance opens directly from the street below the castle wall, and the rooms extend into several cave passages. Anyone exploring the back areas should watch for uneven floors and narrow doorways.
In one cave a dusty ship's corset hangs from the ceiling, which superstition says no one removes because it would bring bad luck. Deeper in the rock lie remnants of an old cell where a chair was carved straight from the stone.
