Eel Pie Sound Studios, Recording studio in Twickenham, United Kingdom
Eel Pie Sound Studios was a professional recording facility housed in a former boathouse along the River Thames at Ranelagh Drive in Twickenham. The venue featured full production equipment and recording capabilities suited for serious music creation.
Pete Townshend founded this commercial recording facility in 1981, establishing it as an active production center for the music industry. The site ceased operations in 2008 when the building was converted into a private residence.
The studio welcomed many well-known artists including The Who, Roger Waters, A-ha, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Thin Lizzy who came to record here. Musicians valued this location as a retreat from London's hustle where they could focus on their work.
The waterfront location offered musicians an unusual transportation choice: they could access the facility by boat, avoiding London traffic entirely. The site on Ranelagh Drive was also accessible by more conventional means of reaching the area.
A second location at 45 Broadwick Street in Soho, London, extended the studio's reach into central London's music scene. This expansion reflected the growing importance of the operation within the British recording industry.
