Dunans Castle, Listed country house in Glendaruel, Scotland
Dunans Castle is a listed country house in Glendaruel valley in Argyll and Bute. The building combines an older mansion with a Victorian wing and shows features of French château architecture alongside Scottish tower forms.
The name Dounens appears on maps since 1590 and marks an estate in this area. Andrew Kerr designed the current castle in 1864 and expanded the existing building considerably.
The castle exemplifies the architectural preferences of Victorian-era Scottish landowners who sought to merge French and baronial design elements.
A fire in 2001 damaged large parts of the castle severely and restoration is still not complete. The Dunans Charitable Trust works on recovery and access remains limited for safety reasons.
The estate sells symbolic land shares and grants buyers the ceremonial title Laird or Lady of Dunans. This tradition helps raise funds for restoring the damaged castle.
