Dundas Castle

Dundas Castle is a tower house in Dalmeny built from stone with Gothic details added and refined over time. The building features tall windows facing manicured lawns and sits within grounds registered as a designed landscape in Scotland's national inventory.

The original tower was built in 1416 when James Dundas received authorization from the Duke of Albany, and expanded in 1436. A century later, it became connected to major political events when Cromwell stayed there during his Scottish military campaign.

The castle served as the long-standing seat of the Dundas family and continues to define the character of the surrounding area. The way the buildings and gardens are laid out reflects the importance this family held in Scottish life.

The castle is privately owned and used for events like weddings and corporate gatherings, so visiting requires prior arrangement. It sits outside Edinburgh near the village of Dalmeny in a fairly remote location, so plan your journey ahead.

A statue of Oliver Cromwell stands outside the keep, marking his stay during the 1650 Battle of Dunbar campaign. This monument is unusual because it honors an English military leader at a Scottish castle.
