Elan Valley Reservoirs, Chain of reservoirs in Mid Wales
The Elan Valley Reservoirs consist of five main lakes created by damming the Elan and Claerwen rivers, spreading across moorland and forested hillsides. The water bodies are connected by walking trails and roads that wind through the valley floor, offering views of the surrounding landscape.
Construction began in 1893 to supply clean water to Birmingham following disease outbreaks from contaminated sources. The project transformed the valley and remained a vital water supply for the city for generations.
The estate functions as a nature reserve where visitors regularly walk among heathland and moorland, experiencing a landscape shaped by conservation efforts over generations.
Access to the reservoirs is via the B4518 road from the town of Rhayader, which leads to the Visitor Centre where parking is available. Walking trails circle the water bodies and range from easy riverside paths to longer hillside routes, suited to different fitness levels.
One of the dams served as a testing site for bouncing bomb experiments during World War II, a secret wartime project now marked with commemorative plaques. Few visitors realize this valley played a role in aviation history.
