Ward of Farringdon Without, Administrative ward in City of London, England.
Ward of Farringdon Without is the largest of the 25 wards in the City of London and extends across the area outside the original medieval defensive walls to Chancery Lane. It encompasses several major institutions and landmarks within its boundaries.
The ward was created in 1394 when the original Farringdon Ward split into two parts, with this section designated as lying outside the London Wall. This division reflected important administrative changes in the medieval city.
The ward takes its name from Farringdon Street, which itself was named after a medieval landowner whose family held property in the area for generations. This historic street still runs through the district and remains one of its defining features.
The ward is governed by an elected Alderman and ten Common Councilors who handle local administrative matters. Visitors can move easily through the area as it contains several pedestrian zones and publicly accessible spaces.
Along the ward's northern boundary runs the underground Fagswell Brook, a lost river that merged with the Fleet River and now flows beneath Farringdon Road. This hidden waterway is a trace of London's forgotten hydrology.
