Fisherman's Walk Cliff Railway, Funicular railway in Southbourne, United Kingdom.
Fisherman's Walk Cliff Railway is a funicular in the coastal district of Southbourne, Bournemouth, connecting the beach promenade to the cliff top via a double-track system. Each car holds up to 12 passengers and runs along a short but steep slope down to the seafront.
The railway was built in 1935 by Bournemouth Corporation as the town expanded along the coast and beach access became a growing need. It was the third cliff lift of its kind in the town, following two earlier installations in other parts of Bournemouth.
The railway links Southbourne's residential area with its beach and is used daily by locals to avoid the steep cliff path. Families and older visitors often rely on it as a simple way to reach the shore without walking down the slope.
The railway runs seasonally from April to October and accepts card payments for tickets. It may close temporarily during rough weather, so a calm day is a good time to visit if you want to be sure it is running.
This railway holds a Guinness World Record for the shortest funicular track in the world. The slope it covers, though brief, is steep enough that walking down it on foot takes real effort, which explains why the railway has stayed in use for so long.
