Gibraltar Mill is a tower mill in Great Bardfield with three stories and a distinctive boat-shaped cap. The structure features four double Patent sails and walls roughly 1.2 meters thick at the base.
The mill was built following the great storm of 1703 and operated until 1930. A major transformation occurred in 1754 when the structure was changed from octagonal to circular.
The mill represents the agricultural heritage of Essex, standing as a testament to the grain processing methods that supported local communities for generations.
The building stands about 13 meters tall with a base diameter of roughly 6 meters, making it relatively compact. The location in Great Bardfield is easily accessible on foot and offers good views from the road.
The original cast iron windshaft from 1877 remains in place at the mill. This component marks the shift from wooden to metal parts in mill engineering history.
