Folkestone White Horse, Horse hill figure on Cheriton Hill, United Kingdom.
The Folkestone White Horse is a large horse figure carved into Cheriton Hill, stretching roughly 90 meters across the slope. It shows a running horse with extended legs, a raised head, and a flowing mane made from white limestone slabs.
Work started in 2002 when volunteers marked out the outline and dug trenches to set limestone slabs in place. The figure was completed in 2003, creating a modern take on ancient hillside art traditions.
Local residents and Gurkha soldiers stationed nearby worked together to build this figure, combining their efforts to position large limestone slabs. This shared effort reflects how the community created something that belongs to everyone.
You can view the figure from several locations along Weymouth Road, the M20 roundabout, or the nearby Tesco car park. Stepping back allows you to see the full shape rather than standing too close.
Inside the figure lies a time capsule filled with names and messages from supporters, buried there in 2004. This hidden collection connects the creation's past to its future.
