Gotham House, Grade II* listed building in Tiverton, England
Gotham House is a Georgian merchant's townhouse in Tiverton featuring red brickwork in Flemish bond pattern and a symmetrical five-bay facade supported by four columns. The building now serves as offices for a solicitors' firm on Phoenix Lane.
The house was built in the early eighteenth century by George Davey, a clothier and Mayor of Tiverton, following the devastating fire of 1731. Its construction was part of the town's recovery and rebuilding after that disaster.
The house contains original eighteenth-century elements such as a library with period books and an ornamental fireplace with Corinthian capitals and cherub details. These features reveal how prosperous merchants lived and the artistic tastes they valued.
The building is visible from the street but not open to visitors as it functions as a law office. You can view the architectural features and original entrance gates from Phoenix Lane without disturbing the current occupants.
Documents bearing Oliver Cromwell's signature were discovered in the basement during renovation work. These rare historical artifacts reveal unexpected layers of history hidden within the house.
