Gurnard's Head, Iron Age promontory fort in Zennor, England

The headland extends into the Atlantic Ocean from the north coast of the Penwith peninsula, featuring two stone ramparts that cross its narrowest section.

Archaeological excavations in 1939 revealed that the inner rampart was built with three steps, providing strategic positions for defenders using slings during the Iron Age.

The site's Cornish name Ynyal translates to 'desolate,' reflecting the remote character of this coastal fortification that contains remains of sixteen round houses.

The National Trust maintains this scheduled monument, which visitors can access via the South West Coast Path crossing the southern part of the headland.

The geological formation includes basaltic pillow lavas created through underwater volcanic eruptions approximately 400 million years ago.
