Gateway House, Modernist office building near Piccadilly Station, Manchester, England
Gateway House is a modern office building with nine floors beside Manchester's Piccadilly Station. The structure curves in an S-shape along Station Approach and combines office space, hotel rooms, and retail areas under one roof.
Richard Seifert & Partners completed this building in 1969 to replace a row of nineteenth-century railway warehouses at the site. The development marked a shift toward modernist design near the station area.
The building's distinctive S-shaped design represents a departure from the concrete brutalism common in British architecture during the 1960s.
The building sits directly next to Piccadilly Station, making it easy to spot and access from the station area. You can walk around the exterior and explore the shops at street level without needing special permission.
The curved shape of the building earned it a playful local nickname based on its lazy-looking S form. This distinctive curve originated from an early architectural sketch that shaped the entire design.
