Gatton Park, Historic country estate in Reigate and Banstead, England
Gatton Park is a country estate in Reigate and Banstead featuring over 500 acres of landscaped grounds with gardens, extensive woodlands, and water features shaped by 18th-century design principles. The layout combines open spaces, planted areas, and ponds in a way that was fashionable among English estates of that period.
This site appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 and later came under Crown ownership during Henry VIII's time. Its parliamentary connections lasted until 1832, reflecting its former political importance in the region.
St Andrew's Church on the grounds displays carved doors and altar woodwork imported from Nuremberg and Rouen, showing how craftsmen from across Europe influenced local religious spaces. These imported elements reveal the estate's connections to continental artistic traditions.
The site welcomes visitors on the first Sunday of each month from February through December, with special events held throughout the year. Allow plenty of time to walk around the large grounds and explore the different areas at a relaxed pace.
The Millennium Stones installation features Caithness flagstones with inscriptions reflecting 2000 years of British history, creating a modern addition to the historic grounds. This contemporary work offers visitors a chance to connect past and present in an unexpected way.
