Glover's Island, River island in Richmond upon Thames, England
Glover's Island is a tree-covered river island located between Richmond Lock and Teddington Lock on the Thames. The small landmass remains closed to visitors, preserved as a protected natural reserve.
The island was purchased by Joseph Glover, a Richmond waterman, in 1872. A protective covenant established in 1900 has prevented any development on the site since then.
The island represents an effort to protect natural spaces along the Thames, showing how locals value preserving wildlife habitats within urban areas. Its role demonstrates the community's commitment to maintaining the river's ecological balance.
The island is not open to visitors, but can be viewed from nearby riverbanks or by boat. Those interested in seeing it should look from the Richmond shore or during a river cruise.
During World War II, the island provided shelter for Humboldt penguins from London Zoo in 1940 after bombing destroyed their enclosure. This unusual wartime rescue shows how the small island became a refuge for exotic animals in crisis.
