Harmondsworth Great Barn, Medieval timber barn in Harmondsworth, England
Harmondsworth Great Barn is a medieval wooden barn located in Harmondsworth near London. The building stretches about 192 feet (58 meters) long and 37 feet (11 meters) wide, supported by 13 massive oak trusses that hold up the roof.
Winchester College built this barn between 1425 and 1427 as an agricultural storage facility to produce income. The structure dates from a time when such large wooden buildings were still commonly constructed in England.
The interior layout with twelve sections shows how medieval carpenters joined heavy timbers together with remarkable skill and precision. People visiting today can see the craftsmanship that made such large storage buildings possible in medieval times.
The barn opens to visitors on select Sundays during the warmer months, allowing you to walk inside and examine the timber structure up close. Parking is available behind the building, making it straightforward to access.
The structure retains roughly 95 percent of its original timber materials, making it one of the most complete examples of medieval timber building in England. This high proportion of original wood makes it invaluable for understanding how such buildings were actually constructed.
