The Hatchet Inn, Grade II listed timber pub in Bristol, England

The Hatchet Inn is a black and white timber-framed building located at 27 Frogmore Street with multiple stories and an outdoor garden space. The venue now features function rooms, a pool area, and distinct spaces designed for both casual visiting and special occasions.

The building was constructed in 1606 and remains the oldest continuously operating pub in Bristol. Its name derives from the axes used by woodsmen working in the nearby Clifton Woods.

The pub became known for hosting alternative music performances during the 1980s, with rock bands regularly playing in the upper-level space. This musical heritage shaped how locals viewed the place as a gathering spot for artistic expression and community connection.

The pub opens daily and works well as a stop while exploring the neighborhood, especially if you take time to enjoy the garden area. The multiple floors and distinct spaces allow you to find what suits your mood, whether a quieter corner or a livelier area.

A major renovation in 2021 refreshed the building while preserving its original timber-frame structure and character. This careful work maintained the seventeenth-century craftsmanship while introducing contemporary comforts and facilities for visitors.
