Highdown New Mill

Highdown New Mill is a cylindrical stone tower with white exterior walls and a rotating cap mechanism designed to harness wind power. The structure displays classic features of a tower grinding mill with traditional equipment for processing grain.

This mill was built in the late 18th century to serve the local farming community by grinding grain into flour during the period of industrial milling expansion. Its long history as a working mill shaped the region's agricultural economy.

The position of the mill's sweeps traditionally served as a way to signal local community events such as births and deaths, a custom that continues to this day.

This mill opens to visitors on scheduled days, allowing people to explore the working machinery and traditional milling equipment inside. Card payments are accepted at the entrance and in the tea room.

A growing group of volunteers works to preserve traditional grinding methods and keep the mill operating as a working craft. Visitors can observe how the old milling practices are still performed today.
