Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, Nuclear power plant in Stogursey, United Kingdom
Hinkley Point C is a nuclear power station under construction in Stogursey in the United Kingdom, rising on a site covering roughly 175 hectares along the coast of Bridgwater Bay. Two European pressurized water reactors, each with 1.6 gigawatt capacity, form the core of the facility.
The government granted EDF a development consent order in March 2013. The actual construction work began later following years of preparation and planning processes.
The site sits within the landscape of Bridgwater Bay and draws visitors interested in modern energy engineering. Visitor centers and information points offer insight into the scale of the project.
The facility expects to generate around 26 terawatt-hours of electricity annually once completed. The site remains restricted to the public during the construction phase.
The construction uses a heavy-lift crane known as Big Carl, among the largest devices of its kind worldwide. This crane lifted massive liner rings for the reactor unit to heights of several dozen meters.
