Kilve Beach, Rocky beach near Watchet, Somerset, England
Kilve Beach is a rocky shore in Somerset with limestone cliffs framing a slate and shingle coastline. The exposed surface reveals numerous tidal pools that become visible at low tide and shape the landscape.
The cliff layers date from the Jurassic period and contain fossils such as ammonites and remains of marine reptiles. This geological record spans millions of years of Earth history within the yellow, brown, and blue rock strata.
The shore drew poet William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy to nearby Alfoxden House in the late 18th century, where they found inspiration for their work. This connection shaped how people later viewed and valued this quiet stretch of coast.
A pay car park is accessible via a narrow lane from the A39 road, with toilet facilities and a grassy area for relaxing. The best time to explore is at low tide, when the tidal pools and shoreline are fully exposed.
The site is a protected area of special scientific interest preserving oil-rich shale layers that reveal Earth's ancient past. Fossil collection is restricted here to safeguard these geological treasures for the future.

The landscape ranges from limestone gorges like Ebbor Gorge to ancient oak woodlands and coastal sections with geological formations at Kilve Beach. The villages contain market halls, dovecotes and small churches that reflect centuries of local use.
