Hinton House, English country house in Hinton St George, England
Hinton House is an English country house in the village of Hinton St George, Somerset. The building has a south front modeled on the Banqueting House in Whitehall, and it sits within gardens and a park that together form a listed landscape.
The house was substantially rebuilt around 1500 by Sir Amias Paulet, who transformed an older medieval structure. During the 18th century, Matthew Brettingham and later John Soane each made major changes to the building.
The name of the house comes directly from the village it has long been tied to, giving a sense of how deeply the estate shaped local identity. Visitors can still read different periods in the stonework and façades, each part telling something about the generation that built it.
The house has been converted into private apartments and is not open to the public. The gardens and park sometimes open on special days, so it is worth checking before planning a visit.
The stable block at the edge of the estate was designed by John Soane in the late 18th century and received its own separate listed building status. It is rare for an outbuilding to be listed independently from the main house, which says a lot about the quality of Soane's work here.
