Villa rustica of Lopen, Roman villa ruins in Lopen, United Kingdom
The Roman villa at Lopen features extensive mosaics spanning ten meters in length, with geometric patterns and marine life depictions across its floors.
Construction workers discovered the remains of this Roman agricultural estate in 2001 during the development of a farm access road near the ancient Fosse Way.
The mosaics found at Lopen belong to the Corinthian school of design, demonstrating the influence of Roman artistic traditions in fourth-century Britain.
Following archaeological excavations led by Terrain Archaeology, the mosaics were covered again to protect them from environmental damage and deterioration.
The villa contains one of the largest continuous mosaic floors discovered in Roman Britain, incorporating both geometric designs and naturalistic elements.
