Jesmond Old Cemetery is a Victorian burial ground with twin chapels featuring high round arches at the main entrance from Jesmond Road, displaying classical design elements. The grounds contain several Grade II listed monuments and numerous historical graves from different periods.
The cemetery was founded in 1834 during the height of the cemetery movement in the 19th century. It contains graves of ten Commonwealth service personnel, with eight from World War I and two from World War II.
The grounds contain the tomb of architect John Dobson, who designed the cemetery, along with seven Grade II listed monuments and multiple historical graves.
The grounds are open to visitors and feature well-maintained pathways connecting the various monuments and graves. Regular upkeep by the Friends organization ensures the site remains accessible and pleasant to walk through year-round.
The grounds include a Gothic tower tomb belonging to Archibald Reed, a prominent Victorian mayor of Newcastle. This striking structure stands out for its distinctive architectural style on the cemetery grounds.
