Kilvey Hill, Hill summit in St. Thomas, Swansea, United Kingdom
Kilvey Hill is a 193 meter summit overlooking Swansea with views of the city center, docks, bay, and Lower Swansea Valley. The hill can be reached via a concrete road from Bon-y-maen village or through marked walking trails from multiple starting points.
The hill was originally named Y Bigwrn by the Welsh, with its peak called Pen y Bigwrn, before it became known as Mynydd Cilfái in later times. This shift in names marks the evolving relationship between the community and this prominent landmark.
The community woodland at the center of the hill serves as a gathering space where locals engage with nature throughout the year. People use this area for recreation and reflection, making it an important green lung for the neighborhood.
A concrete road from Bon-y-maen village provides direct access to the summit, though several alternative walking routes are also available. Visitors should wear proper footwear and be prepared for changing weather conditions on the exposed hilltop.
The hill hosts the annual Kilvey Killer race where participants run up and down while carrying cement sacks. Proceeds from this unusual event support the baby unit at Singleton Hospital in the area.
