Insole Court, Gothic Revival mansion in Llandaff, Wales.

Insole Court is a Gothic Revival sandstone mansion in Llandaff featuring an embattled medieval-style tower and multiple wings built over successive periods. The residence displays ornate stone detailing, geometric gardens, and interior spaces that span from 1855 onwards, with several rooms retained in their original decorative schemes.

The residence was built in the mid-1800s for James Harvey Insole, a coal industry leader, and underwent major additions during the 1870s as his wealth grew. It later served as Cardiff's Air Raid Warden headquarters during World War II before eventually opening to the public.

The Smoking Room displays an original painted frieze showing the four seasons, while the library features Gothic ribbed paneling adorned with gilt decoration. These spaces offer a window into how Victorian-era owners expressed their taste and values through interior design.

The grounds are open to visitors and contain a café located in the Potting Shed along with several event spaces including the Carriage House Hall and Drawing Room. Good walking shoes and comfortable clothing are recommended since exploring the various wings and gardens involves navigating different levels and areas.

The first floor retains an exceptionally well-preserved collection of Victorian-era furnishings and decorations, making it one of Cardiff's most complete period interiors still in situ. Few residences from that time maintain this level of original detail throughout their main rooms.
