Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, Zoo and conservation center in Westmorland and Furness, England.
Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is a zoo and conservation center in Westmorland and Furness, England, spread across about 3 acres (1.2 hectares) and home to a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. The animals are kept in tropical indoor halls, outdoor enclosures, a butterfly house, and walk-through areas where big cats can be seen at close range.
The site opened in 1992 as a combined zoo and museum, and has grown over the years through the addition of new enclosures and indoor areas. A major milestone came in 2014 when the first snow leopard cubs born in Northern England were raised here.
The place is well known locally for its hands-on approach to wildlife education, with information boards and keeper talks that visitors of all ages can follow easily. School groups from the surrounding area visit often, giving the site the feel of a community space as much as a zoo.
The center is easy to reach by car from the M6 motorway and has its own parking on site, so arriving by road is straightforward. A café and gift shop are available on the grounds, and most visitors find that half a day is enough time to see everything at a relaxed pace.
The zoo is laid out to follow an evolutionary journey, grouping animals according to their place in the history of life rather than by geography or size. This kind of arrangement is rarely found in a zoo of this scale and gives the visit a sense of moving through time as you walk from one area to the next.
