Jordanhill College, Educational institution in Jordanhill, Glasgow, Scotland.
Jordanhill College is a former teacher training institute located in a residential area of west Glasgow, Scotland. The site brings together several brick buildings dating mainly from the 1920s, set within open green grounds, and is listed as a category B building.
The institution was set up in 1921 after Glasgow Corporation bought the Jordanhill Estate from James Parker Smith, a local MP. It grew into the main centre for teacher training in Scotland before closing in 2012.
The name of the site comes from the Jordanhill Estate, a country property that once stood on this land. Today the buildings serve new purposes, but visitors can still read the original educational function in the layout of the grounds.
The site sits in a quiet residential part of west Glasgow and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. Since the college no longer operates, it is worth checking in advance which parts of the grounds are open to visitors.
The David Stow Building on the site is named after a 19th-century educator who is credited with founding the modern system of teacher training in Scotland. This connection places the college within a tradition that goes back well before its 1921 opening.
