Jubilee Tower, Monument tower on Darwen Hill, Lancashire, England
Jubilee Tower is an octagonal stone tower standing on Darwen Hill, rising approximately 85 feet (26 meters) high. A spiral staircase inside connects two viewing platforms where visitors can stop and look out across the landscape.
The tower was built in 1898 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Its construction came after local residents won a lengthy battle to secure the right to walk freely across the surrounding moorlands.
The tower symbolizes local pride in keeping the moors accessible to everyone. It stands as a reminder of ordinary people standing up for their right to walk freely across the countryside.
The walk starts from Sunnyhurst pub and follows a marked path that climbs steadily uphill for about a mile. The tower itself is open to everyone free of charge, though the path can be muddy and slippery after rain.
On clear days, the upper platform offers views stretching north to Morecambe Bay and sometimes even to Blackpool Tower in the distance. To the south, the view reaches across to Wales and the Isle of Man.
