Llancillo Church, Medieval church in Llancillo, England
Llancillo Church is a medieval place of worship in England constructed with sandstone walls adorned with tufa dressings, featuring a chancel, nave, and south porch beneath a slate roof. Inside, you will find a 13th-century font and a 17th-century pulpit, with the building showing distinct construction phases across its walls and structure.
The chancel dates to the late 11th century, marking the building's earliest phase. Major rebuilding occurred during the 17th century, when new windows and roof structures transformed the church into the form we see today.
The church served as a gathering place for generations of the Scudamore family, whose stone monuments line the walls and tell stories of local prominence. Walking through the interior, you sense the deep roots this family established in the parish over centuries.
The building sits in rural countryside and is best reached by car along country roads in the area. Allow extra time for your visit since the location is isolated and finding your way there may require careful navigation.
One of the two bells in the bell-cote displays an unusually long and slender form that reveals its origin in the 13th century. This ancient bell is a rare example of medieval casting work that many visitors walk past without noticing.
