Grosmont Castle

Grosmont Castle is a stone fortress from the Norman period located on elevated ground near the Welsh border. It features two circular towers, a gatehouse, and inner ward walls that demonstrate the layout of a typical medieval defensive structure.

After the invasion of 1066, Norman builders constructed this fortress to protect the route from Wales to Hereford during territorial expansion. It later evolved from a purely military structure into a fortified residence, reflecting its changing role at the English-Welsh border.

The castle is one of three fortifications in Gwent that together with Skenfrith and White Castle demonstrate Norman military architecture in Wales. These three strongholds shape how visitors understand medieval border defense between England and Wales.

The ruins are accessible year-round, but visitors should expect uneven ground and older structures. It is helpful to prepare for exploring the exposed foundations and towers and to wear comfortable shoes.

The north block contains a 14th-century octagonal chimney stack that marks the transition from a purely military fortress to a noble residence. This architectural detail reveals how the fortress evolved from a place of warfare to a lived-in home.
