Langstone Bridge, Road bridge in Havant, England
Langstone Bridge is a concrete road bridge that crosses the channel between Langstone and Chichester Harbours, connecting mainland Hampshire to Hayling Island. The A3023 road runs across it, and it remains the only fixed link spanning the water in this location.
Before the concrete bridge opened in 1956, a wooden structure with weight limits stood here and forced passengers from overloaded buses to walk across. The new construction finally provided a reliable year-round link independent of tidal conditions.
The construction of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal in the 1820s transformed the maritime landscape, leading to the development of modern bridge infrastructure.
The bridge is open to all vehicle types and offers direct passage between the mainland and the island without waiting. Traffic can get heavier during peak times, particularly on weekends and in the summer season.
Archaeological work in 2006 revealed that this location sits on a natural high point that people have used since Roman times. The bridge position therefore follows an ancient natural crossing point over the water.
