Langstone Windmill, Tower mill in Langstone, England
Langstone Windmill is a four-story tower mill in Langstone with a domed cap and four sails mounted on a wooden shaft. The interior contains multiple levels that once housed the milling machinery and later residential quarters.
Built around 1730, this structure served as a grain mill alongside a tidal mill for about two centuries. It ceased operating around 1934 and fell into disrepair before being restored for residential use.
The mill became a residence in 1939 when architect Ernst L. Freud redesigned its interior for living spaces. This shift from industrial use to a private home gave the building a second life within the local community.
The mill stands near the Royal Oak Pub and is accessible via main roads in Hampshire. As a private residence, visitors can best appreciate it from the outside and from the surrounding paths.
The structure shows signs of vertical expansion, with an extra floor added during its working years as a mill. This modification remains visible in the masonry and reflects how the building adapted to its operational needs.
