Little Russia, Historical Russian neighborhood in Tottenham, United Kingdom.
Little Russia is a neighborhood at the northern edge of the London Borough of Haringey in Tottenham, spanning Pretoria Road, Durban Road, and Lorenco Road west of the railway line. The area contains a mix of residential buildings from different periods that reflect the character of this long-settled district.
The neighborhood took its name in the early 1900s when Russian immigrants arrived in large numbers after fleeing the 1917 Russian Revolution. These newcomers shaped the area's identity and established it as a center for London's Russian-speaking population.
The area housed a vibrant Russian-speaking community that maintained Eastern European traditions through local shops, restaurants, and community centers. These gathering places allowed residents to preserve their cultural ties and way of life.
The area is accessible via local rail connections and sits within a densely residential district with good road access. Visitors should know that the neighborhood's appearance changed substantially through rebuilding in the 1970s, and it now consists mostly of modern residential buildings.
Moscow-born writer Zinovy Zinik created a BBC Radio 3 broadcast in 2009 called The Ghosts of Little Russia that explored the neighborhood's heritage. This radio program documented the history and legacy of the Russian community that once inhabited the area.
