London Road Cemetery, Grade I listed park and garden in Coventry, England
London Road Cemetery is a Grade I listed park and burial ground in Coventry built on the site of a former quarry. The grounds feature two chapels, numerous monuments, landscaped gardens, and unusual tree species planted throughout.
Joseph Paxton designed this burial ground in 1845, converting an abandoned quarry into a refined cemetery. It became a model for the Victorian garden cemetery movement that spread across England.
The cemetery holds graves of many Victorian industrialists whose innovations shaped bicycle and automobile manufacturing. Walking through, visitors notice monuments and tombs reflecting the importance these figures held in their community.
The cemetery operates with different hours depending on the season, opening early in the morning and closing at sunset or early evening. Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is hilly with uneven pathways throughout the grounds.
The grounds hold a collection of exotic tree species brought from distant places, reflecting Victorian fascination with rare plants. This unusual botanical mix makes it a surprising destination for nature lovers.
