Lowfield Heath Windmill, Post mill in Charlwood, England
Lowfield Heath Windmill is a post mill in Charlwood with multiple floors connected by an external staircase and internal ladders. The building displays the typical layout of rural mills with processing spaces spread across different levels.
Built in 1737, the mill operated on wind power until 1880. Steam-driven machinery then powered the grinding stones until operations ceased in 1890.
The windmill stands as an example of traditional milling technology, demonstrating the engineering methods used for grain processing in rural England.
The mill can be visited from May through August on the last Sunday of each month. Wear sturdy shoes and prepare for narrow staircases and steep ladders inside.
Local volunteers spent 18 years taking apart, repairing, and reconstructing the entire structure. This extensive restoration work saved the building from decay and made visitor access possible today.
