The Mangrove, Caribbean restaurant in Notting Hill, London, England

The Mangrove was a restaurant at All Saints Road that served Caribbean food in spacious dining rooms decorated with leather furniture and African artworks. The establishment became known in the neighborhood for its welcoming atmosphere and authentic cooking.

Frank Crichlow founded The Mangrove in 1968 as a community gathering place, and it faced multiple police raids between 1969 and 1970. These confrontations led to legal proceedings that became significant moments in the struggle against injustice.

The restaurant served as a gathering space where the Black community could meet, share meals, and celebrate their heritage through food and music. It became a place where people felt welcomed and could express themselves freely.

The location no longer operates as a restaurant but can be visited as a historical site marked with a commemorative plaque. You can find the address on All Saints Road and take time to understand the history through the marker and surrounding area.

Owner Frank Crichlow is remembered today for standing against injustice, and the restaurant displayed artworks by Jimi Hendrix and other renowned artists. The place attracted musicians and creatives who gathered there to share their work and perform.
