Mentmore and Crafton Studs, Horse breeding facility in Buckinghamshire, England

Mentmore and Crafton Studs are horse breeding facilities in the Buckinghamshire countryside with multiple stable blocks, paddocks, and training grounds spread across the landscape. The complex lies near Mentmore Towers and focuses on raising quality thoroughbred horses.

Crafton Stud was founded around 1850 by Baron Mayer de Rothschild, while Mentmore was built between 1913 and 1914 by the 5th Earl of Rosebery. Both men created breeding centers that gained fame for producing racehorses of exceptional quality.

The studs remain connected to British horse racing tradition, with the daily work on the grounds showing how generations of breeders have developed quality thoroughbreds here. Walking through the facilities gives a sense of this long commitment to the sport.

These are active breeding facilities with strict operational schedules and specialized care routines for the horses throughout the year. Access is limited since they function as private working spaces rather than public attractions.

King Tom, a celebrated stallion from the early days, was honored with a memorial at his burial site in Mentmore before it was moved to Dalmeny in 1977. This relic shows how individual horses were remembered in the breeding community.
