Milefortlet 21, Roman fortification in Crosscanonby, England.
Milefortlet 21 is a Roman fortification in Crosscanonby with preserved stone foundations and two entry gates. The structure allowed Roman troops to monitor the coastline and protect trade routes in the region.
The structure was built as part of Rome's coastal defense system on the northwest coast of Britain during occupation in the 2nd century. It was one of many independent fortifications that strengthened frontier protection.
The site reflects how Romans monitored and defended the coastline through a chain of small outposts. The visible stonework and gate remains offer insight into how soldiers lived at this remote coastal position.
The site is located near the coast road and accessible from a dedicated car park. Visitors can view the remains from a viewing platform that provides good overview of the entire layout.
The structure was the first milefortlet in Roman Britain to be fully excavated, providing archaeologists with detailed insights into military construction methods. This excavation became a model for understanding similar structures elsewhere on the coast.
