Millennium Point, Convention center and architectural structure in Eastside, Birmingham, England
Millennium Point is a large multi-use building in the Eastside district of Birmingham, combining a convention center, a cinema-style auditorium, and spaces for several education and research institutions. The complex also houses the Birmingham Science Museum and the Faculty of Computing and Engineering of Birmingham City University.
The building was designed by Grimshaw Architects and completed in September 2001, as part of a broader effort to regenerate the Eastside area of Birmingham. The official opening took place the following year, in July 2002.
The building is home to the Birmingham Science Museum, which draws school groups and families on a regular basis. Walking through the entrance hall, visitors often find themselves alongside students from Birmingham City University, giving the place a lively mix of learning and public life.
The building is easy to reach by public transport, with bus and train connections nearby in the Eastside area. Opening times can vary depending on what events or exhibitions are running, so it is worth checking before you visit.
In 2021, the building was converted in just a few days into one of the first mass vaccination centers in the United Kingdom. This was possible because the interior spaces can be reconfigured quickly for very different purposes without major structural changes.
