Moggerhanger House, Historic country house in Moggerhanger, England.
Moggerhanger House is a Georgian country house in Moggerhanger, Bedfordshire, England, set within a park and woodland that form part of the estate. The building is constructed in Portland stone, with a symmetrical facade and finely worked interior rooms.
In the late 18th century, a director of the Bank of England commissioned John Soane to remodel an existing house on the site. The work continued over several decades and was finished in the early 19th century.
Moggerhanger House is used today as a venue for events and conferences, but it also welcomes visitors interested in Georgian interiors. The rooms still hold period furnishings that show how a wealthy English household of that era was arranged and decorated.
The grounds around the house are open on most days and offer good paths for walking through the gardens and woodland. For tours inside the house, it is worth checking in advance which days they are available.
Moggerhanger House is one of only four surviving buildings designed by John Soane that visitors can still enter today. Soane used the exterior walls of this house to test a new type of cement render that he was developing at the time.
