Muslim Burial Ground, Horsell Common, Cemetery and memorial garden in Horsell Common, Woking, Great Britain.
The Muslim Burial Ground is a cemetery and memorial garden on Horsell Common featuring stone walls, a chhatri pavilion, and a reflecting pond. Himalayan Birch trees arranged in geometric patterns surround the water, creating an ordered and contemplative setting.
Established in 1917, the site was created to provide burial spaces for 27 Muslim soldiers from the British Indian Army who died in the World Wars. Its design followed Islamic burial practices while honoring their military service.
The site holds meaning as a place where soldiers far from home were laid to rest according to their faith. Today, visitors see how the geometric gardens and pavilion create a space that honors both religious tradition and military sacrifice.
The site is easily accessed through well-maintained pathways on Horsell Common and is straightforward to explore. Interpretive signs along the route provide context and explain the significance of different areas.
The site underwent a transformation into a Peace Garden in 2015 that kept the original architecture intact while introducing new water features. This reworking added fresh elements to the space without erasing its purpose as a soldiers' memorial.
