Mount Healthy windmill, ruined windmill in British Virgin Islands
Mount Healthy is a windmill ruin sitting on a hilltop in Tortola that once formed part of a large sugar plantation. The structure consists of remaining walls, foundations, and old machinery parts that demonstrate how the mill was once powered by wind to process sugarcane.
The mill was built in the 18th century and belonged to one of the area's most prosperous planters who controlled sugar processing on his estate. After the early 1800s, the sugar industry declined and the mill was gradually abandoned until it eventually collapsed.
The name Mount Healthy refers to its hilltop location overlooking the surrounding landscape during the plantation era. The ruins still display the simple form of an industrial structure from that period, serving as a quiet reminder of the work once conducted there.
The ruin is located within a protected park where visitors can freely walk around and explore the remains. The site near Brewer's Bay works well as part of a combined visit since several historical ruins in the region are accessible on foot.
The former owner was connected to one of the island's most notorious planters, adding a darker historical dimension to this site. The hilltop location was deliberately chosen to capture wind power, a design decision that reflects the technical knowledge of the planters.
